Flower Prices on Valentine’s Day

It’s no secret that flower prices can be exorbitant leading up to Valentine’s Day. You may be tempted to think that it is florists who drive the price of flowers up at this time of year, but it is the increased demand that heavily affects the market prices. Most flowers around the world are sold at auction and as the big floral events approach (Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, etc) there is such an increase in demand that natural market forces drive the price up exponentially.

It’s not just the global flower auctions that can affect an increase in the price of flowers around Valentine’s Day. It is the cost of transporting massive quantities of flowers in such a short and within a very specific time frame that can quadruple (or more) the cost of a single red rose for Valentine’s Day.

Supply Chain for Flowers in 2022

With our years of experience in the floral industry, Luz Flora is able to estimate how many flowers we think we will need for our Valentine floral deliveries, and have been ordering flowers from our farms in Ecuador since 2021. In fact, we were placing our Valentine’s Day flower order BEFORE the flowers even started growing!

With ongoing shipping delays due to Covid-19, you can expect that prices of Valentine’s flowers will rise even higher than previous years. There are significant and global challenges around logistics in the floral industry, so unless you order before the 10th of February, expect to pay more. A LOT more!

VALENTINE’S DAY FLORAL FUN FACT: Over 224 million roses are grown just for Valentine’s Day each year!

Are Valentine’s Day Flowers Good Quality?

The straight answer is… It depends. Many florists don't know where the flowers are coming from. It’s a good idea at any time of the year, to ask your florist where their flowers are grown, and which countries they import from. Red flag if you florist does not know! When we started Luz Flora we wanted to ensure that our supply chain was immaculate and that we knew EXACTLY where our flowers were grown. The only way to guarantee quality flowers for Valentine’s Day is to make sure that we have visibility into the supply chain.

When Is the Best Time to Get Valentine’s Day Flowers Delivered?

NOT ON THE DAY ITSELF. That’s the short answer, and it’s also the best advice!

While it might seem romantic to have your flower arrangement delivered on February 14, there are so many variables to consider. The first is Flower Quality: Get your flowers delivered the day before at the latest. A few days before Valentine’s Day is even better, and you’ll be assured of the quality. Last minute Valentine’s Day flower orders may not only be rushed, but the rose quality, well… you may be getting roses that are fully open (will only last a day) or, that are still in bud and won't open (the effect of a beautiful bouquet is lost).

Luz Top Tip for Valentine’s Deliveries 2022: Order your flowers to be delivered from Wednesday 9 to Friday 11 of February. That way you’re assured that your flowers will open and bloom for Feb 14! Plus you’ll get EXTRA kudos for remembering AHEAD of time!

The second reason to shop early is price: If you place your Valentine’s Day orders ahead of time, you are locking in a price and you know that your order will be processed. Leave it until the last minute and you risk disappointment. At Luz Flora, we will ONLY be taking orders that we can guarantee delivery, and quality. We would rather sell out and miss out on a few rush orders that compromise our service delivery standards.

Order Flowers Now for delivery February 9-11, 2022, to guarantee your price, delivery, and quality. We would also like to point out that many florists can’t offer specific delivery times on busy days like this. To be safe, we recommend that you supply your florist with an address where someone will be available from 8am-5pm. Also, make sure the address and telephone numbers (preferably two phone numbers) are correct to ensure your order gets delivered on time. If the address is wrong or the recipient can’t be reached, your order might only be redelivered the following day.
